Apparently Facebook is in talks with Bing.com and Google.com to make status updates more public. This is a two sided coin. If you are a public figure, or company, and want to be a publicity whore (because really, who doesn’t want free marketing or to exploit all of that organic web traffic), then this is a social voyeurism jackpot! Now, every time you announce that you are taking a shower or drinking a beer, I will be able to find it on the search engines when I google Jo Publicity. Now for some of us more private people, I guess you shouldn’t have your profile setting as “everyone”, otherwise now literally everyone will know when you are bored or making a profound philosophical statement about the latest vampire teen romance and how it relates to your life.
The question of privacy on social networking is one that we have all been debating for a while. Our profiles have become a strange hybrid between public and private. I am putting it out there, but if it condemns or brings judgment on me, then it is an expression of my own private thoughts and therefore non of your business. Our profiles are like our cars on the internet, they have become an extension of our home/our selves, and are as private as we publicly want them to be.
